Why Gila?

The name

Gila is named after the Gila monster, a slow, heavy desert lizard from the American Southwest and northern Mexico that eats only a handful of meals a year. In 1992, John Eng, a researcher at a Veterans Affairs hospital in the Bronx, isolated a peptide from its venom and named it exendin-4. It closely resembled GLP-1, a hormone our own bodies make to steady blood sugar and signal fullness, with one difference that mattered: our GLP-1 breaks down within minutes, and exendin-4 kept working for hours. A synthetic copy, exenatide, was approved in 2005 as the first GLP-1 medicine. The lizard did not cure anything on its own. It gave researchers a starting point, and the GLP-1 medicines many of us take today grew out of that work. That is why the lizard and the desert run through the whole app.

Pronounced HEE-la, like the Gila River.

The story

Gila began as a personal project. I started my own GLP-1 journey in April 2025, lost almost 50 pounds in a short time, and wanted a good way to keep track of my weight and my doses along the way.

I wanted a calm, uncluttered tracker that showed the whole journey at a glance. Nothing on the market back then satisfied me, so I built one for myself and kept working on it.

Gila has a very generous free version and, if you want it, one lifetime purchase. Nothing else, and nothing hidden. No data harvesting. No ads. No subscriptions, ever. Weighing in, logging your doses, Apple Health, reminders and iCloud backup are free, and they will stay free. Gila+ adds extras and supports my work on the app.
